Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Hideki Matsui belted the go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh inning and Alberto Callaspo tacked on a solo shot the following frame, as the Angels beat Seattle, 4-2, in the rubber match of a three-game series.
New York Yankees Lou Gehrig Jersey . Trevor Bell (2-4) allowed nine hits and two runs over six innings in the start for the Angels, who won for just the third time in 10 games. Fernando Rodney notched his eighth save. They got some hits off Trevor, but that was just a function of him attacking the strike zone with his fastball, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. I thought he had good life on his pitches, got the ball into good zones most of the time. They definitely got some opportunities and he made some pitches to get out of some opportunities and showed us a lot out there. Franklin Gutierrez had the lone RBI for the Mariners, who faltered to their eighth defeat in 11 contests. Jason Vargas (9-8) gave up four hits and three runs over seven frames and lost this third straight start. Vargas was good tonight, Mariners manager Daren Brown said. I thought he did an outstanding job. Actually, 6 2/3 solid innings then he left a pitch up to Matsui at the wrong time in the game and it cost him. But, I thought he did a nice job. Mike Napoli doubled with one out in the seventh, and with two down, Matsui drilled an 0-1 offering over the wall in right for his 18th homer of the year and a 3-2 lead. Callaspo homered to right off Sean White with two outs in the eighth. Reggie Willits doubled to start the game and scored later in the first on a groundout from Howie Kendrick. Seattle wasted a chance with runners at second and third and one out in the bottom of the frame, but evened the contest in the third. Chone Figgins singled with one out, stole second and scored on a Gutierrez base hit to left. The Mariners loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth, but came away with just one run when Gutierrez grounded into a double play. Russell Branyan fanned, leaving a runner at third. The hosts again failed with a man at third in the sixth as Adam Moore struck out to end the inning. GAME NOTES:The Angels moved to 12-4 this season against the Mariners. The teams will play a final series September 10-12 in Anaheim...Prior to the game, the Angels reinstated pitchers Jason Bulger and Brian Stokes from the 15-day disabled list. Pie became just the fourth player in Baltimore history to hit for the cycle and first since Aubrey Huff accomplished the feat on June 29, 2007. Brian Roberts went 4-for-6 with three doubles and two RBI for the Orioles, who established a season-high in runs and hits with 19. Cesar Izturis doubled, tripled and knocked in three runs. "It was phenomenal," Roberts said Pies cycle. "Thats a great accomplishment especially for a guy who hasnt had a whole lot of opportunities to play this year." Chris Tillman (1-0) gave up four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings to record his first win in his fourth major league start. Juan Rivera had two RBI and Bobby Abreu homered for the Angels, who were coming off a three-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays at home. Jered Weaver (12-4) surrendered a season-worst eight runs on nine hits and four walks in just 3 1/3 innings to absorb the loss, his first since June 20. He had won five straight decisions and nine of his last 10. "If you fall behind and leave some pitches up theyre going to hit the ball," said Weaver. "They came out swinging the bats really good tonight." Los Angeles pushed two runs across in the opening frame. Maicer Izturis worked a one-out walk and, two batters later, Vladimir Guerrero hit a bloop singgle to shallow left field.
Palmer Jersey. Izturis scored on Pies errant return throw to second and Rivera doubled off the wall in center to plate Guerrero. Baltimore quickly countered in the home portion of the first. A Huff double chased home Roberts and Adam Jones. Nolan Reimold walked and Matt Wieters struck out before Melvin Mora slapped a base hit up the middle to score Huff. Pie then atoned for his earlier miscue with an RBI double and Cesar Izturis followed with a two-run single for a 6-2 Orioles lead. Pie added a solo shot in the third and Abreu went deep to begin the fourth. Wieters lifted a sacrifice fly to left in the bottom of the inning, stretching the advantage to 8-3. Consecutive doubles by Cesar Izturis and Roberts to start the fifth extended the lead to six runs. Los Angeles got two runs back in the seventh on hits by Gary Matthews Jr. and Chone Figgins, but Baltimore answered with a seven-spot in the home half against Shane Loux. Cesar tripled home Pie, then Roberts, Jones and Nick Markakis each recorded an RBI double. Huff was hit by a pitch and Wieters ripped a two-out single to score Markakis. After Mora flied out, Pie tripled to the gap in right-center for a 16-5 lead. Rivera doubled in a run in the eighth to account for the final score. Game Notes Markakis has reached base in 34 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the majors...Baltimore registered nine doubles and 12 extra-base hits...Loux was charged with seven runs and seven hits in 1 2/3 frames.
