THE HEALERS NEWSLETTER Welcome to the new issue of The Healers newsletter. We have some wonderful new information for you. AYURVEDIC MEDICINE: Massage therapist Bhanu Kapil Rider, who now lives and works in Colorado, offers information about how India's Ayurvedic medicine treats menopause -- with some added advice from her mother. Bhanu also explains how she integrates these techniques into her work with clients. We have also made her second book, The Vertical Interrogation of Strangers, our Book of the Month. Click here to read her article "Walking through the 'Dark Gate'" (and to see the picture of Bhanu and her mom). STEPPING STONES: For the past few weeks, it has been difficult if not impossible to escape the unrelenting media coverage of the tragedy of 9/11. In our Healing Habits section, we offer a poem that was given to me by a woman whose daughter was murdered. She said that Stepping Stones helped her find meaning in working with others to overcome their trauma. We have illustrated the poem with an amazing image of a shimmering creek. Please click here if only to see David Griffiths' marvelous Lake applet in action. SPECIAL FOR OUR MIDWEST READERS - DAGARA HEALING WORKSHOP: Gae Winn, a long-time practitioner of earth-based spirutuality, will offer A Communal Grief Ritual workshop at the Howell Conference & Nature Center not far from Ann Arbor, Mich., Sept. 27-29. Gae will guide participants through a healing ceremony that she learned from the Dagara people of Burkina Faso in the Horn of Africa. "The intention is not to replace any teachings that you may carry in your own hear to to add to them," says Gae. "It's my belief that ritual constructed within community opens our heart to Spirit in a way that's rarely attained in individual practice." The workshop will create community through singing, drumming, eating, and working together. "Suspending judgment and cynicism, we will co-create the environment of a traditional village that our ancestors enjoyed." Gae has studied shamanic healing practices with Myron Eshowsky and Plant Spirit Medicine Healer Eliot Cowan. She has studied Tibetan Buddhism with Gelek Rimpoche and West African ritual with Malidoma Somé and Sobonfu Somé. GOOD NEWS ABOUT WATER: It turns out that the universally accepted advice to drink at least 8 8-ounce glasses of water each day -- on top of any other liquids you drink -- was a misreading of limited research done decades ago. (It never made sense to me that a 90-pound woman and a 250-pound man would need the same amount of water each day.) Not only do other beverages count, but the water in food is now recognized as a valuable source of water to keep us hydrated. The bad news, however, is that there really is very little research to tell us how much to drink. My theory is that we should view this new freedom to count other beverages as a great reason to drink a variety of friuit and vegetable juices. We are just beginning to learn the enormous benefits of taking in the phytochemicals or nutriceuticals that abound in these drinks. The only downside are the calories. We also encourage you to consider buying a good, heavy-duty juicer, preferably from our gracious sponsors at Cooking.com. Bottled juices, tasty as many are, just cannot offer the benefits of freshly extracted juice made right in your own kitchen. THE BENEFITS OF MASSAGE - Many of us did not need to wait for the research to confirm that therapeutic massage confers tremendous benefits. Now a study reported on in Nature Neuroscience suggests that there is actually nerve fibers in our brain that link touch to our brain's emotional center. This suggests that we are wired at birth to need touch to remain on an even emotional keel. Sadly, our lives today do not provide as much touching as we probably need. Therapeutic massage not only feels good but it does good things for us.
